Popbitch Playlist: DJ Fresh (Part 1)

DJ Fresh’s new single is out this month, so we decided to not talk about it at all and instead ask him about the rest of the music in his life.  Check the first part of the interview below:

Part 2 coming up tomorrow…

A Breath of Fresh Air

After much deliberation and pillow fighting, we’ve come to the conclusion that DJ Fresh’s ‘Louder’ was our tune of the year.  It came out of nowhere to take dubstep to the number one spot for the first time ever, and it’s been instrumental in the resergence of popularity that the UK dance music scene is currently enjoying.  Well done DJ Fresh, good on you.

But it’s not just ‘Louder’ that’s been doing the rounds up and down the country, DJ Fresh’s been doing it himself; he embarked on the FRESH/LIVE tour in November, bringing his signature blend of dubstep and drum & bass to venues across the British Isles.  Luckily, we got to go along to the London date, where he performed at the UKF Bass Culture party at Alexandra Palace, and I suppose we had better tell you that it was SODDING GREAT.

He wasn’t just standing behind some decks and an iMac playing CDs and waving his hands about the place no, he’s not your usual drum and bass DJ.  He went all out on this one, appearing in some sort of flourescent triangle that was seemingly made out of giant strip lights on a raised platfrom with a keyboard (and some decks and an iMac – shhhhhhh).  But the main attraction was the live band he had with him, which consisted of a number of handpicked musicians on live instruments, as well as extra vocalists and MCs. It were proper good like.

He played a number of his classics, like Gold Dust:

And Lassitude:

He also gave a sneak preview of his forthcoming single which was bloody good but I haven’t got the faintest idea how it went because I was far too preoccupied with suddenly screaming because I didn’t know if I’d left the oven on or not.  Either way, it comes out February and I know it’s going to be good.  Then, when it looked like it was all over, everyone started shouting “LOUDER!” and then the bloke on stage said “DO YOU WANNA GO LOUDER?” and then I shouted “YES I WOULD QUITE LIKE TO GO LOUDER PLEASE MR” and he said “OK THEN LET’S GO LOUDER THEN!” and then it went quiet.

But then a lady started singing and a man started playing guitar – we were getting a nice little acoustic version of Louder.  This was all well and good, but when was the good bit going to come in?  Well, I need not have worried my pretty little head about it for too long because soon enough, he played his number one, and the crowd went mental. It was brillo pad.

The rest of the night was great too, Chase and Status, Gemini, Nero, Flux Pavillion and that lark were all there and all good as usual.  Unfortunately there were so many clashes between the different rooms that we didn’t get to see everyone we wanted, but it’s not like it ruined our night or anything.  The queue for the cloakroom almost did though.

The FRESH/LIVE tour is almost over, but he’s coming back in the Spring with an even bigger tour, so I’d keep your eyes out for tickets.

I’d suggest checking here now and again:
